Tried & Tested: Whipped into shape in 30 min
by Faz Abdul Gaffa
Working out is a chore. Not only do you have to lug your gear to work, you have to set aside two hours, and hope that the classes you want to attend, or the machines you want to use aren’t plagued with inconsiderate freaks of nature.
Here’s where Ritual.sg come in. The new concept gym promises that you’re in and out of their facilities in half an hour flat, unless you want to hang on for longer. You come in, change into workout clothes they provide (you can bring your own too), get your booty whipped into shape at a HIIT (high-intensity interval training) session for twenty minutes, grab a post-workout shake at their bar and you’re done.
I walked in on a Monday afternoon apprehensive, and honestly, a little terrified. The only kind of exercise I get is my yoga practice and keying in my charge card details while online shopping. To determine which level I was at, the trainer, Kai, put me through a series of ten exercises, ranging from standard pushups to kettlebell deadlifts, to pull-ups with TRX suspension straps. And no surprise, I was at level 1.
For twenty minutes, with the supervision of a trainer or two (depending on how crowded the session is), you’re made to do repetitive workout sequences. 40 seconds of burpees, for example, followed by 20 seconds of rest before you continue to the next exercise. For Level 1, I had to do five sets of four different types of exercises, and at the end of it, I was a hot mess on the floor.
With Ritual you know you’re going to have a killer workout in 20 min. Not a half-hearted 20 minutes on the Stairmaster, not a can’t-be-bothered 30 minutes of kickboxing. You’ll be going so hard for 20 minutes that you don’t need to do anything else after. For the try hards, once you’ve gone through the rituals (excuse the pun) a few times, you’ll progress up the levels which progressively get harder and more vomit-inducing.
Classes are kept small, with no more than 10 people working out at the same time, so you’re never going to have to stand in line to shower after. There's also a high convenience factor, the gym is located right in the heart of the CBD, you don't need to brings shoes or workout gear (they can provide clothes), and you'll finish up with a shake at the bar.
For those who want to up the healthy ante on their lifestyles, Founder & Program Director of Ritual, Ian Tan, hands out some handy tips:
1) Take the stairs. Best advice I've ever gotten is to ask yourself, "What would a fat lady do?" - then do the opposite
2) Climb a tree for fun, you did it as a kid so why not as an adult?
3) Break out into a full sprint whenever you get the chance.
4) Find a buddy who is also looking to keep fit and do these activities together.
